Regular styling and stress leads to your once lovely locks looking dry and dull.  This makes it so hard to do anything with!  Hello bad hair days!

Healthy hair needs replenishing regularly with proteins, oils, amino acids, antioxidants and other nutrients which can easily be found in common household ingredients.   Say goodbye to bad hair days with the following:

1.Eggs

how to get silky hairEggs are a great way to restore shine and silkiness by enriching the hair with all important protein for strength and health.

By mixing one egg white with equal parts of honey and olive oil you create an excellent nourishing mask which you apply to damp hair and leave on for half an hour.  Always rinse egg off with cool water rather than hot to avoid ‘cooking’ the egg.  Messy!

2. Beer

Is there any beer in the house?  There usually is beer in my house so I find this to be a super quick remedy for when my hair appears unhealthy.

Grab a beer the day before and how to get silky hairopen the cap so it is flat by the time you wish to use it.  Then apply it from the roots to the ends in the shower after your shampoo just as you would a conditioner.  Leave for about 5 minutes before rinsing.

This works by providing the hair with proteins found in the beer ingredients – malt and hops.

You can apply beer to your hair fortnightly for a refreshing treatment and continued lustre and shine.

3. Avocado

how to get silky hairAvocado is one of the most versatile fruits out there.  Use it to increase your magnesium intake, or to get smoother skin, as well as improving the health of your hair.

It contains many essential oils and nutrients that closely match those in our own skin so it really adds shine to your hair with regular use while also relieving problems associated with a dry scalp eg. dandruff.

For super dry and lifeless hair, add one mashed avocado to a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and massage it through your damp hair.  It feels so awesome!  Cover with a shower cap and leave for about half an hour before rinsing.

Your hair will really love this treatment.  It’s one of my favourites too!

4. Honeyhow to get silky hair

Honey is such a wonderful product from nature being not only delicious but with heaps of other useful applications externally as well.

Honey helps to moisturise your hair and leaves it silky and shiny.  I simply add a tablespoon to my regular conditioner once a week for added moisture.

5. Coconut Oil

This is another versatile item in your food cupboard and its benefits are far and wide.

The incredible moisturising ability of Coconut Oil will really help you if you are wondering how to get silky hair naturally.

Warm the oil slightly so it is runny before applying directly to dry hair.  Massage all the way from the scalp to the ends for healthy skin and hair, wrap it in a towel and wait 30 minutes or so before rinsing in warm water and then shampooing and conditioning as normal.

The vinegar cleans the hair deeply and nourishes it with a weekly application after shampooing.  Use half a cup of vinegar diluted with half a cup of water and leave on for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water.

7. Aloe Vera

I make an aloe vera gel by chopping off a couple of leaves, removing the hard outer skin and blending up the gooey gel in my Thermomix.

Hi, great article there. Did not know we can use eggs and beers as a natural remedy too! Can we just use olive oil as a single component instead of mixing with eggs? Lets say i have oily scalp but also dry hair can i still apply these methods as some of the products are oily in nature.Thank you!

      Hi Jacob,

Try the apple cider vinegar rinse weekly to balance out your oily scalp. Make sure you massage it right to the roots and all the way to the ends. Do this a couple of times a week for 2 weeks, then back to once weekly for maintenance. You can then start adding more of a moisturising treatment such as the avocado or aloe vera.

Best of luck, let me know if that helps!

      Cheers, Kris

    Hi there,

I think using coconut oil on my hair would appeal to me the most. Is coconut oil for cooking suitable or only organic coconut oil which are the more expensive ones?

I’m not sure that I’ll enjoy having eggs on my hair though as there will be a raw eggy smell and I might accidentally cook it.

    Thanks for sharing these tips!

Hi yvonne, I use organic coconut oil for cooking too so I use the same stuff for my hair. I know what you mean about the egg smell, but I have never noticed it too badly maybe due to the fact it is only the whites, and they dont smell so eggy.

Let me know if you end up giving it a go!

      Cheers, Kris
